Escosesa, Stoke Newington, London 15/20

20180810_184409THE name means Scottish in Spanish, which needs a bit of explanation because it means Scottish shellfish of the kind that usually gets exported to Spain. Bucking the trend Stephen Lironi, who in another life is a record producer, gathered a team with cvs from Moro, Barrafina and Arzak in San Sebastian and brought everyone together in the Turkish enclave that is Stoke Newington. It is the kind of new Europe I am partial to. Or you could say the new London, Shoreditch decamped. You could find similar in Spain rather than London.

It is a lively top notch tapas bar that also does paella and other rice at the weekend and everyone speaks Spanish, the music is Spanish, just those fish…20180810_184404There are bar seats by the kitchen and a back room that ought to allow smoking. Oysters are on happy hour at £1 each early on – from Loch Fyne although they also offer Cumbrai oysters which I think means Cumbria plus some delicacies you might not expect like hake roe or squid ink bread or the more expected like the ham croquettas or the chiporones.20180810_190324 They have some clever little touches like the scallop with black pudding and quail egg here 20180810_185752plus some slow cookers like oxtail with parsnip, grilled octopus with with bean puree. Good little place, filled with Stokies rather than tourists. Hola.
